This engaging and interactive three-hour workshop is designed to take your MI skills to the next level. Whether you’re new to MI or have some experience, this workshop will provide you with advanced techniques and practical strategies to effectively motivate and guide clients towards achieving their goals.

Denise Relf, MPA (she/her/hers) is the owner of Never Stop Growing Coaching & Consulting. Denise earned her Master of Public Affairs and Administration in 2009 from Metropolitan College of New York. Since then, Denise has co-created and launched New York City’s first Motivational Interviewing Labs for NYC Administration of Children’s Services (NYC ACS). While at NYC ACS, she served as a major contributor and advisor during the launch of two multi-million-dollar initiatives. Some of her work on those initiatives included: creating adult learning programs for staff development, facilitating, creating train–the–trainer processes, and serving as lead on the agency’s shift towards the incorporation of motivational interviewing and coaching into their Division of Child Welfare and Division of Juvenile Justice. After starting her own coaching and consulting practice in 2020, Denise went on to partner with social service organizations, faculty from the University of Maryland, and NYC school-based support organizations providing training support in motivational interviewing and coaching.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

 

  • Review MI and its importance in client interactions on behavioral change, including, but not limited to: strengthening motivation for change, fostering collaboration, minimizing resistance, and addressing ambivalence that leads to change.  

  • Recognize common challenges and ethical considerations when using MI in client interactions, including, but not limited to: respecting client’s autonomy, assessing client well-being, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity. 

  • Demonstrate an ability to apply advanced MI techniques, including complex reflections, double-sided reflections, and amplified reflections.  

  • Identify how to create collaborative, client-centered S.M.A.R.T goals and action plans.  

  • Recognize the ongoing value of practice and self-reflection in improving MI skills.

The Office of Continuing Professional Education at the University Of Maryland School Of Social Work is authorized by the Board of Social Work Examiners in Maryland to sponsor social work continuing education programs.
