Description

This interactive, 6-hour training invites social workers to explore the full breadth of human sexuality, beyond behavior and identity, through a client-centered, trauma-informed, and ethically grounded lens. Participants will engage in experiential activities that examine sexual development across the lifespan, the cultural and emotional weight of sexual language, and the pervasive sexualization within society. Throughout the days’ activities, attendees will deepen their ability to support clients in reclaiming bodily autonomy, setting values-aligned boundaries, and navigating the lasting impacts of trauma. Rooted in the NASW Code of Ethics and emphasizing cultural humility, this training equips professionals with practical tools and critical insight to affirm clients’ dignity, healing, and capacity for connection across diverse identities and experiences.

This workshop is in accordance with and compliance with the NASW Standards with a focus on service, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, competence and social workers’ ethical responsibilities to clients, in practice settings, as professionals, to the social work profession, to the broader society.

  • Articulate a comprehensive understanding of human sexuality that includes identity, intimacy, development, and social context beyond physical behavior alone.

  • Recognize key patterns and variations in sexual development across the lifespan and consider how trauma, culture, ability, and environment may influence what is considered “normal” or healthy.

  • Critically examine the impact of language and societal messaging on clients’ self-expression, body image, and comfort discussing sexual topics, with an emphasis on reducing shame and promoting bodily autonomy.

  • Identify and evaluate harmful behaviors and systemic patterns of sexualized violence or boundary violations and explore how these harms show up across all genders, communities, and contexts.

  • Explore nuanced models of consent and identify how social workers can use these frameworks to help clients rebuild autonomy, trust, and self-awareness after trauma.

  • Differentiate between boundaries, rules, expectations, and standards, and develop strategies to support clients in setting and maintaining their own values-aligned interpersonal practices and self-protective limits.
