This training will be a clinician-focused presentation on the background and implementation of ACT. A focus of this training will be on directly applying ACT's underlying theoretical framework (RFT) to case conceptualization and ACT's model of healing (psychological flexibility) to treatment planning. The training is delivered by an expert ACT trainer showing a session with a real client using ACT to facilitate meaningful change. This training will emphasize empirically supported practice to empower clinicians.

Tim has a mission to offer evidence-based psychotherapy to help others live full and abundant lives. He specializes in working with attachment and trauma issues, including children and adolescents who have suffered abuse. He is the co-author of The ACT Approach: A Comprehensive Guide for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (PESI, 2017) and The ACT Deck: 55 Acceptance & Commitment Therapy Practices to Build Connection, Find Focus, and Reduce Stress(PESI, 2017). He has also authored a self-help book integrating ACT with attachment-based therapeutic practices into his work. He was an instructor of the Clinical Behavioral Sciences Program, where he taught ACT, at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.  


Tim presents ACT workshops around the world, and he is renowned for his passion and his experiential approach to training professionals.

Upon the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe ACT as an approach that empowers and welcomes all clinical orientations
  • Define psychological flexibility as a measure of health and predictor of positive long-term quality of life outcomes
  • Create a case conceptualization using psychological inflexibility as pathology
  • Identify six markers of psychological inflexibility and track outcomes of interventions
  • Establish values authorship as a means of improving commitment to behavior change outcomes

Category I Maryland BSWE Requirement

The Office of Continuing Professional Education at the University Of Maryland School Of Social Work is authorized by the Board of Social Work Examiners in Maryland to sponsor social work continuing education programs. This workshop qualifies for 3 Category I Continuing Education Units. The Office of Continuing Professional Education is also authorized by the Maryland Board of Psychologists and the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors to sponsor Category A continuing professional education.


ASWB Approved

Course completion requirements: To earn CE credit, social workers must log in at the scheduled time, attend the entire course, and complete the online course evaluation located in your account. After the online course evaluation is completed, you are then able to download your certificate. Partial Credit will not be given for participants who arrive late or leave early.

Unversity of Maryland School of Social Work, Office of Continuing Professional Education, provider #1611, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. UMSSW Office of CPE maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 02/11/2021 to 02/11/2024. Social workers participating in this course receive 3 continuing education credits.
