Data indicates that in 2020, 40.3 million Americans aged 12 and older had a substance use disorder. This number has been rising over the years and as a chronic disease, substance use disorders need to be identified and addressed across healthcare settings and not just in specialized treatment environments. While organizations such as the World Health Organization, Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA), and U.S. Preventative Services Task Force all recommend implementation of SBIRT, widespread adoption of the evidenced-based framework has been slow.
As trusted professionals working in various settings, social workers are well-positioned to complete SBIRT. This training will provide participants with an understanding of the SBIRT framework, including how to integrate and implement the SBIRT components in their work setting. Participants will also gain knowledge of motivational interviewing and understand the application of motivational interviewing techniques in the completion of the brief intervention.

Instructor
Aisling has over a decade of experience working to expand access to behavioral health services for disenfranchised populations, including foster youth, immigrants and refugees, and families impacted by intergenerational trauma and poverty. As a Peace Corps volunteer, Aisling developed specialized programs in Ecuador for survivors of gender-based violence and human trafficking. More recently, she worked on Capitol Hill, where she had the opportunity to work on legislation geared towards improving access to mental health services. Aisling received a Master of Science in Social Work from Columbia University, with a specialization in public policy and international social welfare. As a social worker, she brings a deep understanding of the systemic and social barriers that influence health outcomes and uses her skills to help organizations address critical social issues.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Upon the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe the prevalence of substance use in the United States
- Describe Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) and Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) and their impact on substance use disorders (SUD)
