Description

This course will provide information on transgender, Two Spirit, and gender non-expansive identities and how those intersect with other identities. We will identify ethical dilemmas participants may encounter and review strategies for ethical decision-making. Participants will leave with concrete ways to offer affirming and trauma-informed care with 2STGNC people.

Tavi Hawn holds a Master's Degree in Theological Studies and a Master of Social Work from University of Washington in Seattle. Some of their therapy specialties include trauma recovery, addressing negative self-talk, and managing anxiety and depression. They use a framework that affirms gender non-conforming children, youth, and adults, as well as the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) community. In addition to being a Gender therapist, Tavi provides training to organizations, businesses, schools, and individual therapists. Their goal is to increase access to truly trans-affirming care by providing training, consultation, and supervision to other therapists and health practitioners.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Be familiar with at least 3 ethical practices in working with transgender and gender-expansive or gender non-conforming people 

  • Explain 1 or more concepts from a trauma recovery framework that are relevant for ethical practice with transgender clients 

  • Identify at least 2 ways to promote self-determination in trauma work with gender-expansive clients. 

  • Identify at least 1 way to adapt a type of trauma therapy to be more trans-affirming.  

  • Give at least 1 way one’s culture can inform resilience
