Description

Addiction to prescription opioids, heroin, fentanyl, and the related health, social, and psychological consequences have been increasing for the last 15 years. Last year, there were more opiate overdose deaths than deaths from AIDS at the height of the HIV epidemic in the 80s and 90s. Substance abuse is a complex social problem that has profound implications for today’s social workers. The purpose of this course is to increase participants’ understanding of the biology and psychology of opiate addiction, the effects of addiction on the health of individuals with opiate use disorder (OUD), how OUD affects children and families, and how to address the stigma around substance use and its treatment.
