Knowing When to Step Down: White Leadership with Communities of Color Part II: This is a follow-up to the discussion where Julie Smithwick, a White social worker, community health worker, and ally within Latin@ communities explained how she became the Founder and Executive Director of a statewide Latin@-focused community-based organization and then decided to leave her position so that a person from that community could represent the organization. This workshop will be more in-depth with (1) how she learned to partner with – instead of trying to do for- the Latin@ communities with which she worked, (2) some of the personal work she did that led to that decision, and (3) examples of things other leaders can do to ensure they are leading intentionally and not being harmful or self-serving.

Julie Smithwick, LMSW, CHW Related seminars and products

Julie Smithwick, LMSW, CHW, has over twenty-five years of experience working alongside communities and families to find solutions to address health and social inequities. Trained as a Community Health Worker in Ecuador, she is the founder and director of the Arnold School of Public Health Center for Community Health Alignment. Prior to developing the Center, Smithwick founded and led PASOs, a community-based organization that engages with Latino communities throughout South Carolina utilizing the CHW model. She also helped found the South Carolina CHW Association and is on the Boards of Directors of various organizations including the National Association of Community Health Workers.

Learning Objectives

Upon the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to: 

  • Give examples of ways to learn from communites.
  • Model steps that would lead to partnership within communities of color
  • Develop at least 3 questions to examine their personal role in oppression.

Cost is $25 and includes CE credit. Registering after September 26, 2021 will incur an additional $20 late fee. *Cancellations must be received 24 hours in advance prior to the live interactive webinar to receive a refund or a credit letter.

Category I Maryland BSWE Requirement

The Office of Continuing Professional Education at the University Of Maryland School Of Social Work is authorized by the Board of Social Work Examiners in Maryland to sponsor social work continuing education programs. This workshop qualifies for 1.5 Category I Continuing Education Units for. The Office of Continuing Professional Education is also authorized by the Maryland Board of Psychologists and the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors to sponsor Category A continuing professional education.


ASWB Approved

Course completion requirements: To earn CE credit, social workers must log in at the scheduled time, attend the entire course, and complete the online course evaluation located in your account. After the online course evaluation is completed, you are then able to download your certificate. Partial Credit will not be given for participants who arrive late or leave early.


Unversity of Maryland School of Social Work, Office of Continuing Professional Education, provider #1611, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. UMSSW Office of CPE maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 02/11/2021 to 02/11/2024. Social workers participating in this course receive 1.5 continuing education credits.
