In the transgender and gender-expansive population, the lifetime prevalence of suicide attempts is 27%, according to a recent systematic review. (It is 2.7% in the general population and between 10% and 20% in the LGBTQIA+ population.) The experience of psychiatric hospitalization is very traumatic for many trans and gender-expansive folks, who regularly report being mistreated by police and security, misgendered and bullied by staff and other patients, and placed in facilities and support groups based on their sex assigned at birth rather than their gender identity. This workshop will provide an overview of foundational trans and gender-expansive information for mental health providers and then particularly focus on suicidality, exploring: (1) Why hospitalization is so traumatic for trans and gender-expansive folks via case examples and narratives, (2) how psychiatric hospitals can be made safer for the trans and gender-expansive population and (3) ways in which social workers can support clinical care for trans and gender-expansive clients.

Dr. Montanarelli has presented on creating safe spaces for transgender and gender expansive people at venues such as Georgetown University Hospital and Dominion Psychiatric Hospital. He serves on the Board of Directors of TGEA (TransGender Education Association of Greater Washington, D.C.), whose mission is to provide education on trans and gender-expansive issues.  

Dr. Montanarelli completed his MSW at University of Maryland, Baltimore. He is licensed in Maryland and works at the Maryland Center for Gender & Intimacy. He also holds a BA from Yale and a PhD and LMSW in Comparative Literature from University of California at Berkeley and has taught at U.C. Berkeley and Hunter CUNY. 

Liam identifies as queer and transmasculine.

  • Explain the social construct of binary gender and how it impacts people of all genders. 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of current terminology related to gender identity and know which terms to avoid (including examples of microaggressions).
  • Identify known risks and rates of suicidality and psychiatric hospitalization among trans and gender-expansive people.
  • Support prevention of hospitalization via provision of affirming preventative care.
  • Recognize potential ways psychiatric hospitalization can be made safer for the trans and gender-expansive population.
