Description
The history of queer mental health in the U.S. has been a complex journey. Over the past several decades, significant advancements in psychology, counseling, and social work have helped shift the paradigm toward supporting LGBTQ+ individuals in living more visible and liberated lives. In this workshop, we will explore key historical milestones and examine current challenges in supporting queer mental health.
This workshop is in accordance and in compliance with the NASW standards with a focus on the principles of service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity and competence; and the standard of responsibilities to clients, to colleagues, in practice settings, as professionals, to the social work profession, and to the broader society.
Maryland: This workshop is in compliance with the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners’ COMAR 10.42.03.06.A(5). This workshop meets the requirement for Anti-Oppressive Social Work Practice for the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners (COMAR 10.42.06.03.A.(1)(d)) with a focus on social justice and cultural humility.
District of Columbia: This workshop is in compliance with the District of Columbia Board of Social Work 17-70-7008.4.
- This meets the continuing education requirement for DC Public Health Priorities in the following topic: 10. Implicit bias, cultural competence and Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) in health and healthcare.
- Alternatively, this workshop also meets the LGBTQ+ requirement.
- You cannot use this workshop to satisfy both requirements.

Kevin Waldorf-Cruz, DSW, LICSW, LCSW-C Related Seminars and Products
Dr. Kevin Waldorf-Cruz, DSW, LICSW, LCSW-C (he/they) is the Director of Behavioral Health Practice at Whitman-Walker Health. He started his career here as a volunteer in the food bank in 1995 and shortly after began a clinical path as a behavioral health intern in 1998. He was moved by working with people living with HIV and especially newcomer asylees who faced barriers to accessing health care. Kevin completed his MSW from the Catholic University of America with a focus on trauma-informed care and his doctorate in social work from the University of Southern California with a focus on human-centered management and gender affirming support for transgender youth and families. Kevin’s focus at Whitman-Walker Health has been around trauma informed care; gender affirming care; inclusive, whole-person care for adults and adolescents; integrated behavioral health; graduate education and training; and peer support for LGBTQ seniors. In his free time, Kevin has taught yoga and meditation for over 20 years and has been trained in many modalities of holistic healing.

Category I Maryland BSWE Requirement
The Office of Continuing Professional Education at the University of Maryland School of Social Work is authorized by the Board of Social Work Examiners in Maryland to sponsor social work continuing education programs. This workshop qualifies for 1 Category I Continuing Education Units. The Office of Continuing Professional Education is also authorized by the Maryland Board of Psychologists and the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors to sponsor Category A continuing professional education.
ASWB Information
University of Maryland School of Social Work Office of Continuing Professional Education, #1611, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 2/11/2024-2/11/2027.
To receive ACE credit, full attendance is required; no partial credits will be given for partial attendance.

The Office of Continuing Professional Education at the University of Maryland School of Social Work adheres to the NASW Code of Ethics. In alignment with the NASW Code of Ethics and the University of Maryland Baltimore Code of Conduct, participants are expected to demonstrate professionalism, which includes respecting confidentiality, maintaining a collaborative and respectful tone, and contributing positively to the group dynamic. Disclosures made during the training (e.g., case studies or personal reflections) must be handled with care and in accordance with ethical and legal guidelines.
